The first Monday of May is one of the most anticipated events in the fashion world. Plausibly the most stylish soirée of the year, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art unites the biggest names in fashion, music and art at the Met Gala.
The biggest event on the fashion fundraising calendar, the Met Gala celebrated the theme of ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ this year. Framed around Susan Sontag’s seminal 1964 essay Notes on “Camp”, the theme is a sartorial homage to an exuberant and exaggerated aesthetic seen throughout history. In today’s world, it is referred to as “the art of being extra” or simply over-the-top fashion.
The sartorial confections of Camp on the red carpet incorporated atypical silhouettes, fine sequins, elaborate beadings, dramatized headpieces, defined makeup and overstated jewelry. It was an idyllic night with looks that we wouldn’t get to see otherwise.
From Lady Gaga, Zendaya, Billy Porter, Katy Perry, Harry Styles, Celine Dion, Kim Kardashian and many, many more, worked their magic as they strutted in their opulent modern interpretations of Camp’s aesthetic with mesmerizing jewelry – which by no surprise was our favorite part of the night.
