The history of engraved gemstone began 5000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia. Engraved gemstone were used as a form of identification before a signature exists. As it started to spread throughout Minoan and Mycenaean Greece, Persia, and Egypt. engraved gemstones became more of a fashion statement rather than a functional object. The size, material and complexity of design in engraved gemstones represented individual and social hierarchy.

Jade is an ornamental stone used in Chinese art and jewelry. Chinese believe that jade signifies prosperity, beauty, purity and longevity. Since the age of prehistoric art, jade has been an important material in goldsmithing. It’s still one of the most used materials for handstone carving. Jade carvers take note of the gleam, transparent color and shades. Historically, jade was only worn by tribal leaders and then emperors and noblemen. Furthermore, to show states and power, jade carving was used in vessels, decorative sculptures and ceremonial utensils.

Modern designers incorporate various carving and engraving techniques in gemstones. It’s a trend that has successfully made a comeback. With the help of modern technology, artisans are able to create new shapes and designs in the stone itself.
